Licensing and safety
Do electricians need to be licensed in New Jersey?
Yes. Electrical contractors in New Jersey must be licensed, and the business must hold a business permit from the NJ State Board of Examiners of Electrical Contractors. Homeowners can verify a license and business permit on the Board's website before hiring. Safer Electric is licensed and insured (Electrical Contractor business permit #: 18485).
Do I need a permit for electrical work in New Jersey?
Most electrical installation work needs a permit, but New Jersey has defined exceptions for ordinary maintenance. New circuits, panel changes and charger wiring should be discussed with your municipal construction office before work begins. Do not assume all EV chargers or like-for-like replacements follow the same rule. Permit requirements depend on the work and equipment involved.
Can I do my own electrical work?
Electrical work can cause shock or fire when done incorrectly. New Jersey has licensing and permit rules with limited exemptions. Ask your municipal construction office who may perform the specific work before proceeding. Leave wiring, panel work and charger installations to a qualified electrician.
What is a GFCI outlet and where do I need one?
A GFCI outlet shuts off power almost instantly when it detects a ground fault, which lowers the risk of electric shock. Code generally calls for GFCI protection in wet or damp areas such as kitchens, bathrooms, garages, basements, and outdoors.
What are the warning signs of dangerous wiring?
Warm or discolored outlets, a burning smell, buzzing or crackling sounds, sparks, repeated breaker trips and flickering lights can signal a hazard. Stop using the affected equipment and have a licensed electrician investigate. Do not open the panel or handle wiring. If there is smoke, fire or immediate danger, move to safety and call 911.
Repairs and troubleshooting
Why does my breaker keep tripping?
Common causes are an overloaded circuit, a short, a ground fault, or a worn breaker. Repeated tripping is a warning sign, so it is better to have an electrician find the cause than to keep resetting it.
Why is my outlet or switch not working?
Possible causes include a tripped GFCI or breaker, a loose connection, a worn device or a wiring fault. If the problem persists, have a qualified electrician investigate rather than opening the outlet or switch yourself. Stop using equipment that is hot, damaged, sparking or smells like burning.
Why do my lights flicker or dim?
A loose bulb or connection, an overloaded circuit, or a large appliance starting up can all cause it. If it happens throughout the house or gets worse over time, it can point to a problem at the panel or service and should be checked.
My home only has two-prong outlets. Is that a problem?
Two-prong outlets do not provide a grounding contact for three-prong plugs. Do not simply replace them with three-prong outlets without checking the circuit. A qualified electrician can assess the wiring and discuss suitable grounding or shock-protection options.
Panels and upgrades
How do I know if I need an electrical panel upgrade?
An electrician should assess the condition of the panel, available circuit space and the power needed for planned equipment. Adding an EV charger or other large load may prompt that assessment, but does not automatically require a panel replacement. Repeated breaker trips can also indicate a fault that needs repair rather than a larger panel.
How much does a panel upgrade cost?
The cost depends on the scope of the panel or service work, existing wiring and permit or utility requirements. Contact Safer Electric about your home and the upgrade you have in mind for a project-specific quote. We do not publish a fixed panel-upgrade price here.
EV charging
Can you install a home EV charger?
Yes. Safer Electric installs residential EV chargers in Woodbridge Township and Central New Jersey. Share your vehicle and charger model, where you park and your preferred charger location so we can discuss the electrical work needed.
Will I need a panel upgrade to install an EV charger?
It depends on the existing electrical system and the charger requirements. An electrician needs to assess the load and available capacity before deciding whether panel or service work is necessary. A home charger does not automatically mean replacing the panel.
How much does EV charger installation cost?
The charger requirements, location, distance from the electrical supply and any panel or service work affect the installation scope. Share these details with Safer Electric to discuss a project-specific quote. No fixed installation price or incentive amount is promised here.
Are there incentives for home EV chargers in New Jersey?
Check your utility and state program pages for current eligibility before buying equipment or arranging installation. Program rules and availability can change. This page does not promise an incentive, a particular amount or help with an application.
